Making cake is such a zen act. I do this every month or so when a friends birthday pops up or some special occasion. By the end I don't want to eat it because I've been smelling sugar for hours. But I'm happy to give it away. I kind of like the idea of sculpting something for hours and then having all traces of it disappear.

I feel like my pictures are always a balancing act between what is dark and what is blinding white, and then there is what peephole I allow the viewer to see. I'm playing at encouraging people to see the relationships of everything caught between the poles.

This game has fascinated me since I played it. I like shadowing my images with a lot of black space and the way they use space and depth is just mind blowing. It reminds me that details can be simple to be captivating.

This is a very small clip of a video piece done by Hiraki Sawa. I had to ask a friend for the name of this artist because I saw the video of the rocking horses on white carpet years ago and I never forgot it. I tend to have a hard time watching video work, but for some reason this compels me to stare at it for long periods of time. I think it taps into a child-like feeling.

I made this in grad school years ago. I like the idea of moving images, but they are a tougher medium to tackle.

So I was recently in staying in a hotel for an evening and I noticed something interesting about these creepy lights above the bed. Funny enough I was also watching The Rite on HBO b/c it was the only good thing on. It was either that or sports. So in true Petra fashion I watched the really frightening movie. At least it was semi-inspirational.
